August 1, 2011, 5:05 – 6:30 PM room HC3029

Brought to order by Zip Peacock at 5:05 PM.

Self introduction of those present.

Minutes from 2010 accepted as posted.

Old Business
Demo Workshop web cast considered. Sammy S. will head comm.

Constitution com: Suggestions were raised that an executive committee be formed to PIRA to handle officers unable to complete their terms. Tabled (by vote) until next time. (David Haley).

There was a PIRA sponsored session during the regular AAPT meeting. Ramish gets credit for setting this great demo session. There were 3 to 4 dozen attendees.

Resource room / treasurer’s report: Dave M Maiuillo. Dave thanked several folks for helping with setting up the resource room: Mike, Steve, David, Ramish, Brian Andersson, Steve Way, Kangesnina, Dale, Tom S. Jack, Grable, John (Creighton Univ help), AAPT staff, center staff, Ligos Group, CENCO!!!!. Chyrl and Ben.
So far the income was $1300 and $44 for the Creason fund.

The Apparatus committee has not met yet. Standard agenda, looking for suggestions and leadership for future meeting sessions and workshops.

Lecture Demo Workshop: Dale Stille reported that the workshop went over very well. Of the 200 demos, only one had to be done by “hand waving.” The workshop is now the prime income producer.

Lab workshops: neither Mary Ann nor Van were present at this time, but David Healey reported that the Advanced/intermediate lab had about 15 particiapants, 6 stations, 3 of which were from Lincoln, NE. It went very smoothly. The introductory lab was canceled for lack of participants.

DCS Committee: Tuesday at noon. (Next day.) Since 2005 we have 11,000 entries in the BIB, and we have added entries from Dick & Rae, Sprout, Dave M’s, TPT from 2000 to 2010. Loads of editing. Still working on Earlich’s 2 books. It is all on line, and there is a search engine available.

Lab Classification Scheme. Tabled. No progress.

Professional Concerns, Dean. No report.

Constitution. Covered, no new business.

Nominating Comm: Wayne Eastering. Choosing Treasurer and Vice President. Gerry Zani elected treasurer by acclimation.
(Presidential cycle: Vice President: resource room, President Elect: runs PIRA session,
President: oversees everything and runs the meeting, Past President: in charge of nominations.)
Two nominees for Vice President: Keith Warren and David Haley. No nominations from the floor. Short speeches from each. Secret ballot elected Keith Warren Vice President.

Dave Strum reported the AAPT Exec discussion of meeting restructuring. Possibility of one meeting a year and more committee work by electronics. Express you ideas to a board member.

New Business:

Kudos to Michael Thomason for the great work on the PIRA Website.

Steve Shropshire then repeated some of Dave’s report from the Exec comm of AAPT.
Significant changes in meeting structure and AAPT organization. Please contact Steve with ideas/thoughts/concerns. Maybe eliminating winter meeting. Stop the hemorrhaging for funds. Outreach to faculty, staff and students at schools. High school is particularly weak. Look for a Google doc from Steve for a place add ideas.

Zig then asked for special recognition of members who have been of great service to PIRA: Steve Shropshire, Sammy Sampere, Brian Jones, Tony Papario, Terry Singleton, Dave Sturm, Greg Pusker.

Suggestions for Philadelphia, 2012.
Dave suggesting overseas public education outreach session. Well received.
Much enthusiasm was expressed for a workshop on rejuvenation of Van de Graff based on Dick Berg’s article and the experience of PIRA members.

New Business from Gerry Zani: “How would you quantify the benefit you get from attending AAPT about demos and labs and professional development.” We should form a committee to gather in that information. Motion for the committee as passed. Gerry gets to lead it and recruit members.

Meeting was then closed by Zig.
